Redefining the way we look at “Palliative and Hospice” Care

The “Unity” Program

When I originally started my programs I wanted something unique that stood out from other nutritionist; even more to the point, I wanted personalized, mindful support and direction for that specific animals body. Essentially all of the things you can’t accomplish within a 1 hour consultation. Not once did I ever imagine that hospice care for canines would be where Dolce’s Legacy would take me.

After my certification I began working with a few private rescues, rescues tend to be inundated with some of the hardest cases when it comes to skin ailments and worse. And so my “Cancer Program” came to life. I wanted a way that I could give back considering Dolce’s loss. My way of giving tribute or penance if you will for not being able to save him. The cancer program was just that, A program that was designed for 24 hour unlimited access and support specific to that body’s needs; through nutrition, herbalism and homeopathic modalities… for the duration of that animals life! When I designed the website I wanted a way to memorialize those that lost their battles with cancer, but I also wanted my page to be a place of hope and support. I’ve never once promised a single client that “I can fix this”, instead I want us to look at cancer in a new light… for some of us, a disease we can live “with”. I’ve had many clients come to me with very short time lines, weeks or even months. We got years with them. In the end, yes we lost our battles, but its still a celebration.

This past spring, I had a very passionate client come to me with late stage cardiomyopathy. Her appointment wasn’t until the next week and I had a cancellation so I bumped her up. Fiona was perfection and moms heart. Fiona was the first non cancer canine that I offered the program to. Mom was ecstatic and honored, when in reality the honor was all mine. Tragedy struck a very few short days later when Fiona went into cardiac arrest. Like all of my clients, if in the rare occurrence that I lose one before a specific date, then I work with the other dogs in the home for 6 more weeks in hopes to help further educate and stave off the common mistakes we’ve all made. We all sound like three year olds stomping our feet in the midst of a tantrum yelling at the universe, “this isn’t fair'“. In this instance life was simply cruel… Fiona’s sister Talula was diagnosed with MCT. Today Talula is thriving and has a new sibling. They will be with me for years as far as I’m concerned.

I never wanted a program where I only work the one dog in the house … how is that fair or conducive to spreading education? It’s not! Which is why I make it a point that all dogs and cats in the house get the same quality of health treatment and support.

A few months ago another client came to me with (MGN or MPGN) Immune Complex Mediated Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis. The short explanation, this is not something I can fix and if untreated can easily go in to renal failure. Introducing our happy go lucky guy Finnick. Like many owners, when we are given a diagnosis like this we tend to want to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the condition. It didn’t help our boy was super itchy and has some skin issues as well. The good news is our renal values are holding and we’re weaning him off of several things and replacing them with healthier alternatives. It’s easy to become overwhelmed, especially with all of the information on Dr. Google and Social Media platforms. For these reasons thats where I come in. For Finnick and his mom right now I’m here for emotional support and guidance. Im here to trouble shoot and eliminate our itchy skin without losing the ground we’ve gained with his renal values. I’m here to simplify life and give her the type of support she needs. Later on if we start losing that battle, then I’ll be here for a totally different set of guidelines.

After Finnick I started thinking about my cancer program and how it’s becoming a buzz within certain groups, I also started thinking how it was unfair for me just to allow cancer dogs. In the end,  hospice after all is still hospice, and I know if it were me I’d want that type of support for Dolce. I wanted something that supported what I’ve built on and off of Social Media. A space to bond and support for everyone. And so I’d like to introduce to you, The “Unity” Program. It’s still the same great program, I’m simply opening it up to Heart, Liver, Kidney and Neurological conditions.  As always, Thank you for being here! Thank you for taking the time to watch the video in honor of just a few of our clients. Some are graciously still here with us. Some have moved on. We currently have 89 “Unity” dogs. And while I’d love to say there was never a need for a program like this. I’ll always be honored that these families chose to be part of “Dolce’s Legacy “.
